Well, I was holding a piece of cabbage leaf. Believe it or not, it's bigger than my brother's 22 inch LCD monitor! I should've brought along my mom. She loves veggies :)

A cabbage severely attacked by worms. These cabbages will still be harvested and sold to the general public at a lower price. You'll find these cheap cabbages at the Bangladeshi veggie shops along Brinchang. Cheap yet edible.

I learnt something from the farmers. Harvest cabbage anytime after the heads form. Select those with compact and heavy heads. Cut the head only; do not pull up the whole plant. Cut as close to the lower surface of the head as possible; leave the loose outer leaves intact. Buds will grow in the axils of these leaves, forming “cabbage sprouts.”

Tomatoes are DIRT-CHEAP in Cameron Highlands. I bought one big packet of tomatoes (over 40 fruits) for only RM1 from a Chinese lady manning a veggie roadside stall in Brinchang. I was skeptical at first; suspecting she was selling rotten tomatoes at low price just to get rid of them. Later, I found out that she is a farmer who owns a piece of land with lots of veggies. I also bought three large-sized corns from her at RM1 each. IT was great talking to here. A VERY NICE LADY :)

I was curious about the earliest stage of a growing cabbage. I found a plot of land with junior cabbage plants. It's just pieces of leaves! By the way, the cabbage farm is SO SMELLY! It smell like cow dung! I think the farmers used organic fertilisers such as animals droppings.

An adult capsicum plant with over 10 maturing fruits. The Bangladeshi worker insisted me to follow him to a particular plot of land to show the farm's collection of healthy capsicum plants. WOW! I was surprised to see a young plant barely 1m long bearing lots of fruits.

Peppers need about the same care as tomatoes. This a young capsicum fruit. It has a deflated flesh. It will expand to a nice oval like shape in less than one week. According to Wikipedia "The fruit of most species of Capsicum contains capsaicin (methyl vanillyl nonenamide), a lipophilic chemical that can produce a strong burning sensation in the mouth (and, if not properly digested, the anus) of the unaccustomed eater." Malaysia's capsicum is not 'hot' at all. It's crunchy and sweet :)

This Bangladeshi worker was one proud farmer. The foreign workers are generally friendly and pleasant. They are very happy working in this farm earning some RM900 per month. That's a whopping 17742.92 Bangladeshi Taka (BDT). It's sad to know that they have to move to Malaysia working as hard labour even though most of them are young intelligent chaps with a university degree.

This farm has a strawberry garden, an animal farm, a cactus garden and a HUGE piece of land cultivated with tomatoes, capsicum, green apples and chillis. I spent one and a half hour exploring the veggie farm. A great place to visit. Just remember to skipped the first three attractions in the farm.

On my way down (from Gunung Brinchang), I saw a signboard promoting a place known as Mountain Strawberry Farm. Sounds interesting! The place has a strawberry farm, a cactus garden and an animal park. Entrance is FOC. Upon entering the strawberry farm, my jaw dropped. I said to myself “What? You call this a strawberry farm??” The Bangladeshi worker asked me “Leng chai wanna pluck some strawberries” and I said “Tengok dulu” (“See first”). Only few strawberries plants were bearing matured red coloured fruits. Next, I venture into the animal park. Some rabbits, chickens, goats and ducks. What the HECK?

Disappointed….I was on my way leaving the farm when I noticed a huge piece of land cultivated with tomatoes, cabbages, apples, capsicums and chilies. I spoke briefly with the Bangladeshis and requested permission to visit the veggie farm. They nodded their heads. The Bangladeshis were more than happy to be my tour guide showing me the fruits of their labour. I rejected them politely because I preferred to do it on my own. It was my first time seeing hundreds of tomato trees bearing baby to large-sized tomatoes. I LOVE touring the veggie farm UP, CLOSE & PERSONAL. The apples in the farm are CUTE!!! I’ve spent one hour exploring the veggie farm.

I walked back to my car and took my lunch. After that, I referred to my map again and drove to Kg. Sg. Ruil where the aboriginal’s population were relocated. Darn…Post 3 is already way too long. I’m going to talk about my encounter with orang asli in my fourth post. Remember to follow!!

  6. @Shelyn,

Bukit Brinchang is not bad. A wonderful place to explore when the day is clear and bright. Can see lots of places from the observation tower including the straits of Malacca.

    @fufu,

The food at Pasar Malam Brinchang is cheap and nice!! (The pasar Malam normally opens on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night). On public school holidays, it open daily. The Chow Kuey Teow is the BEST in Malaysia!!!!! A must try delicacy.

fufu, I'm going to explore Perak Tong, Sam Poh Tong, Taiping Zoo, Gua Tempurung, River Terrapin Breeding Centre in Bota Kanan, Leaning Tower of Teluk Intan +++ and also a short visit to Kelantan.

I don't know whether you're comfortable traveling with me.I normally go solo all the way. I still look at you as a true and wonderful traveler. Not sure if I am up to your expectation.

Best Wishes to Shelyn & fufu,
    mylo

  10. @fufu,

I'll be back next week. Have to return to office by 11th June 2009. Thanks for the msn address.

I'll do more research about those places. Not sure whether I'm able to cover Kelantan. It's another 200km away to visit the wonderful Thai-Buddhist Temple. I hope I can see the sleeping and sitting Buddha in Kelantan.

    Cheers,
    mylo
