A stern looking God of War.

According to Wikipedia:

Guan Yu is traditionally portrayed as a red-faced warrior with a long lush beard. While his beard was indeed mentioned in the Records of Three Kingdoms, the idea of his red face may have derived from a later description of him in Chapter One of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where the following passage appears:

“Xuande took a glance at the man, who stood at a height of nine chi, and had a two chi long beard; his face was of the color of a Zao, with red lips; his eyes were like that of a phoenix's, and his eyebrows resembled silkworms. He had a dignified aura and looked quite majestic"

The yellow color is overpowering! Interestingly, yellow and gold color herald heavenly glory - according to Chinese traditions.

I did not expect to see a Chinese temple at the end of the paddy fields. From afar, I can see two beautiful temple towers. I decided to visit this temple.

I'm a banana and total noob in Chinese words. I was trying hard to figure out the name of this temple. Luckily, I stumbled upon a board circular that mentioned this place as Sekinchan Nine Emperor Gods 九皇爺 Temple.

I spent almost one hour checking out the interior and exterior of the temple. At first, I walked into the temple. I saw a huge praying altar with statues of deities. Other than that, there are two sets of Chinese fortune telling sticks. The whole place was eerily quiet! There is nobody in the temple - not even a caretaker. It's kind of creepy!

After that I walked out of the temple. I climbed up the two twin towers on the temple. It was really windy. At the top of the tower, I can see virtually the entire paddy fields in Sekinchan. The temple roof was decorated with ornate porcelain tiles. Simply beautiful and outstanding!

If you are traveling to Sekinchan in Kuala Selangor, remember to visit the following attractions (click to read my journey):

Lately, I've been traveling back to the same places. On Thursday (14th January 2010), I drove for nearly two hours back to Sekinchan. This is my second trip to Sekinchan paddy fields in Kuala Selangor.

Did you know? Selangor will be the next largest paddy producer in Malaysia. It was reported in The Star paper....but I can't find the archived news report. During my first visit, I only managed to explore 50% of the paddy fields. The fields in Sekinchan are HUGE & ENDLESS!

On my first trip, I was forced to return back to my car after spending few hours there - the heat was unbearable. I was TOASTED ALIVE under the hot sun. I got some great pictures and also severe sunburn that lasted for almost a week.

For my latest trip, I wanted to explore the inner fields. So, I drove my car deep into the paddy fields. It was a refreshing and relaxing drive. Green horizons on both sides of the road. Occasionally, I saw a few hardworking farmers tending the paddy fields.

I was driving slowly on the narrow tarred road. I saw a huge and colorful Chinese temple at the end of the paddy fields. It is a beautiful temple. Remember to catch my next article to view pictures of this temple.

After visiting the temple, I explored the unseen paddy fields in Sekinchan - hidden from the main road. Along the way, I stumbled upon 20 plots of medium sized land cultivated with green veggies. It was surreal. The place looks like a mini Cameron Highlands! I was surprised to see that especially in paddy fields.

I parked my car at the side of the road. Gosh, I was worried sick about my car. Huge vehicles (including lorries and vans) were speeding along the narrow road. It was impossible to find a decent parking spot at the end of the fields! Utterly frustrating!

It was another EXTREME HOT AFTERNOON! I was sweating like a horse and smelling like a pig. At one point, I can feel my skin burning! As usual, I was mesmerized by the surrounding....thus forgotten the torturing sun...momentarily. First time in my life seeing cucumber and lime plants. That's AWESOME!

It was an amazing experience exploring the veggie farms. I've learnt a lot from this trip. The growing cucumbers (I called them baby cucu) are CUTE! Cucumber is a type of climbing plants. The twisted tendrils are as strong as a nylon rope. NO KIDDING! Also, young cucumbers fruits have prickly thorns!

At one point, I felt like a total stranger trespassing on these private farms. I saw metal fences barricading the farms - perhaps to ward off veggie robbers. Along the way, I met a Chinese farmer who was spraying some sort of chemical solution on these veggies. I looked at him and he looked back at me. I wanted to talk to him but I don't think he wanted that. So, I just moved on exploring other farms.

Next, I walked to a big plot of land planted with chilies. The chilies grow at the bottom of the plant - close to the soil. Again, I grabbed some chilies with my left hand and click the snap button with my right hand. OMG! ..........The bunch of chilies detached from the plant...easily. I just dumped it on the ground. Luckily, nobody spotted me. LOL!

I spent almost one and a half hour walking under the hot sun exploring these farms. The place was eerily quiet - with occasional vehicles speeding through the field.

On my way back to my car, I chanced upon some lime trees. There are less than 50 lime trees (based on my own estimation). But the trees were fruiting actively! At least 100++ limes on a single tree. The trees are so smelly :) A mixture of lime and lemon smell. I grabbed some fruits with my hand and the fragrant smell lasted for nearly one whole night!

Overall, it was another beautiful trip. I did not expect to see a medium sized veggie farm at the end of the fields. I think I'm the first blogger to cover this veggie farm.

Stay tune for my upcoming post - The colorful temple in the middle of the paddy fields :)

According to Wikipedia, the family Ampullariidae, common name the apple snails, are large tropical and subtropical freshwater gastropods with an operculum.

The Ampullariidae are unusual because they have both gills and lungs, the mantle cavity being divided to separate the two types of respiratory structures, allowing them to be amphibious. Source: Wikipedia

It was hot but breezy. I have to take shelter under a tree every 15 minutes. The heat was unbearable!

One week ago, I returned to Sekinchan in Selangor. I wanted to explore the lush paddy field in Sekinchan. It was a one and a half hour drive via Federal Route 54.

I parked my car next to a plot of empty land. It was the HOTTEST afternoon in my life! I was walking under the hot sun for two long hours. The next few days, flakes of skin were peeled off from my face! I look like a molting snake! I had horrible sunburn on my face, neck and hands :(

Nevertheless, it was an amazing trip. Another great day for photography. I discovered many wonderful animals along the way. I found loads of 'siput gondang emas' (translation: golden apple snails) and their clusters of pinkish eggs. The snails has invaded the paddy fields! This species has become a major pest of rice throughout Asia and Malaysia. Other than that, I also stumbled upon some cute looking birds hiding in the paddy field.

Later, I stumbled upon a dull building. It has a rectangle shape with no windows. Swiftlets were flying in and out of the building. Several hailers were positioned on top of the building - blaring out repetitive bird’s calls. It is a custom made building for swiftlet farming. In other words, this is an artificial breeding ground for swiftlets. I wanted to check out the interior of the building. But it was locked.

I LOVE the endless green horizon. I wish I can stay for another one hour. But, the hot sun was killing me...slowly! I decided to call it a day and walked back to my car. Overall, Sekinchan paddy fields are breathtaking, relaxing and a beautiful place. It is definitely another MUST-SEE attraction in Selangor.

Earlier, I’ve published two blog articles about 'The Big Fish In Sekinchan'. Click here to read my encounter:

Sekinchan fishing village is located right behind a petrol station. There is no proper signboard about the fishing town and paddy field. Remember to ask the town folks for directions.

Overall, it was an amazing trip! I spent four hours exploring the fishing village. I saw fishermen unloading tons of fishes, prawns, crabs and squids. Other than that, I also witnessed the making of salted fish or 'ham yu'. You would never be bored. The village has a little bit of everything. A visit to Sekinchan fishing village is highly recommended!

I'll let the pictures do the talking.
