My 5 Unforgettable Moments in KL - In Comic Strips

Posted by shloke 21 November 2009
I was born and raised in Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur (KL) - best known as KL Chinatown. When I was a kid, my father owned a stall selling bootleg T-shirts and jerseys imported from Thailand and China. Well, that was years ago. Today, I am a young city dweller working in KL.

I've had my fair share of happy and sad moments in KL - the capital city of Malaysia. Over the years, I had wanted to escape the hustle & bustle of city life. I dreamt of a place surrounded with lush nature. No more traffic jams, rude drivers, pollutions and daylight robberies.

But the charm of KL City far outweighs the negatives. I often find it hard to give up the luxuries I have been accustomed to in my urban home. To sum up my TOP 5 MOMENTS in KL, I've created a series of comic and pictorial strips. A mixture of good and bad memories.

My TOP 5 Unforgettable Moments In KL:

Moment 1 - My First Love In KL

(Met My First Girl When I Was Working At Lot 10, Bukit Bintang)
Strange.....I still remember my first LOVE (16 years old). It was THE BEST MOMENT IN MY LIFE!

Moment 2 - Festival & Celebration

(Festive Seasons - Chinese New Year, Diwali, Hari Raya & Christmas)
One of the significant characteristics of Malaysian culture is its celebration of various festivals and events. The year is filled with colourful, exhilarating and exciting activities. I LOVE celebrating these events with my friends in KL City - The more the merrier!

Moment 3 - KL Lush Nature

(Hiking In Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve & Exploring Lake Garden)
The greatest experience for me is the connection I felt with NATURE

Moment 4 - Meeting Friendly KL Folks

(Up, Close & Personal With 1Malaysia)
KL folks are friendly and likeable.

Moment 5 - Daylight Robberies

(I Was Robbed TWICE At Knifepoint In KL)
Petty thefts like pickpockets and street thieves are common in KL. Overall, KL is pretty much a safe place and our crime rates arent as high as other major cities.

  2. Enjoyed your cartoon strip. Nicely done! Petaling St is my favourite hangout when I do drive up to KL. It's a bustling and lively place with lots of makan places. Lovely.

Thanks! It was a fun doodling these funny stuffs :)

The food in Petaling Street is definitely delicious! My favourite are asam laksa with generous portion of fish meat, curry laska with 'chu pei' and deep fired 'Yong Tau Fu' Gosh, I'm already hungry.

Looking back, I missed those younger days living in KL Chinatown.

    Cheers!

  10. Nice comic. Myself haven't been to Petaling Street for a few years already.
Hope you were not hurt when you were robbed. Malaysia is no longer safe. The citizens are living in fear.

  12. Ha ha... You're so multiple-talented! Now, you can draw?!
I think there are good & bad people everywhere in the world. So each place is unique! KL is definitely one of them.

Thank you fufu and all my faithful readers. Without your readership and support, there is no mylo :)

Actually, doodling cartoons is not that difficult. Now, I'm already addicted to that!

First love was funny and full of joy. Well, we are different - it makes no different...whoever start the first move. Three words 'LOVE IS AWESOME'.

1ondoncaller, I totally agree with you. In fact, I have to say our crime rates is not so bad after all compared to big city like Mexico.

Welcome to my photo and travel blog!

Petaling Street a.k.a KL Chinatown is a tourist paradise. But, I really hope the traders behave themselves and be more courteous.

Looking back, it happened when I was waiting for a public bus to KL. A motorist stopped his bike (wearing full helmet) and approached me. He was 'asking for directions'. Moments later, he took out a parang hidden in his jacket and poke it on my tummy. Cash and hand phone all gone!

But, as mentioned in my reply to 1ondoncaller, our crime rates is not so bad after all. The petty thefts in Klang Valley is making us look like a crook city. LOL!

    Cheers to all!

  16. mylo , is it true that most of the trader in Petaling street got link with the UNDERWORLD? . I have some bad experience in petaling street , i was being force to buy a t shirt at an unreasonable price and when i refuse , a group of them threatened me.My friend also had some experience there .He buys a VCD which cost only a few ringgit and pay using a RM50 note. The guy don't want to return back balance money and started to threaten him , fearing for his safety , he just forget about the balance money.Maybe you can give some exclusive insight on the life at petaling street as there a numerous report also regarding the UNDERWORLD activity in petaling street

Where should I start? It's been a long time since my last visit to Chinatown.

Well, my last visit was a forgettable trip. The traders were kind of RUDE and INTIMIDATING.

Is there any underworld influence? Well, I don't think so. It's just the traders. They need to learn the correct way to handle their customers. As I mentioned in my reply above, THEY CAN BE IRRITATING & INTIMIDATING.

One more thing, always bring along a good buddy when your are trying to get a bargain. Some of these traders are famous for using 'AHEM' selling tactics if you are alone.

    Cheers!

  20. Wow... the comics are really cool... did you draw all those characters? Perhaps you should create a post on how to use photoshop to draw the comics.

You have been robbed twice! Unbelievable... I think the last moment is the best one to share to increase awareness of the readers about the safety in Malaysia.

    Gee...thanks!

The cartoons? Well, it's a mixture of doodles plus 'mix & match'. I'm using another program to create these doodles. Gosh....I'm a newbie in doodles. So, I'm not qualified to write up a step-by-step guide.

Yep....twice unlucky. Usually, I prefer taking the bus rather than driving to KL City. So, one quiet afternoon, I was approached by a biker. He was holding a piece of paper - on the pretext of asking direction. Later, he took out a 'parang' hidden in his jacket and threatened me. So, I gave him my cash and hand phone. He warned me not to shout or he'll slash me. Well, I was tempted to shout 'TOLONG!!!!!!' but I guess my life is more important :)

    Cheers!
