Street Photography: Unseen Works

Posted by shloke 17 November 2010
Hi folks! I've been busy coding my Facebook page. Nowadays I'm hooked on Facebook. Thanks to Mark! LOL! Nevertheless I'm able to find some leisure time to update my blog. Today I'm going talk about street photography. On second thought....NAH! It's 3:07 a.m. in the morning. Let me put it this way. Street photography is all about getting up, close and personal. Bruce Gilden (veteran Magnum photographer) says it all "If you can smell the street by looking at the photo, then it’s a street photograph. You feel like you’re really there".

So let's cut the crap. I'll let the pictures do the talking. Here are some of my UNPUBLISHED and UNSEEN street shots. Thanks for dropping by! Muchas gracias! 。◕ ‿ ◕。

Title: Telur itik A1...BAGUS! [Translation: A1 duck eggs...GREAT!]
Location: Chow Kit New Bazaar, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
About: I LOVE this shot. His friends aked him to 'lagak sikit' (act a bit). So he gave his thumbs up, in a jestful manner. It happened so FAST! A micro of a second. Luckily I was able to freeze the moment in time :)

Title: YEEEEE HAWWWWWW! Look at me!
Location: Aboriginal Resettlement Village, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
About: A kiddo strutting his stuff. There were a bunch of kids around me. This lad was happy enough to show off his physical talent. Mr Arnold Schwarzenegger will be very proud. "I'll be back to challenge you!" ~ Arnie

Title: Smile and the world smiles with you
Location: Hatyai หาดใหญ่ Wet Market, Southern Thailand
About: Aunty was busy processing a big pile of catfish. Nonetheless, she was more than happy to look at me. I told her to carry on with her job. Anyway, that's a beautiful smile. ขอบคุณ (ka-khrab) madame! Thanks to CK KHOO for Thai translation :)

Title: Pull baby, PULL!
Location: Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2010, Putrajaya, Malaysia
About: Mr. Hercules and his mean machine :) I guess he was distracted by something else.

Title: I'm camera shy
Location: Pudu Wet Market, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
About: This man was nervous as a cat. All I want him to do is R.E.L.A.X. The intelligent thing to do, of course, is to shut my mouth. I kinda like his mixed feelings. Street photography ~ you want to keep things as simple and casual as possible.

Title: Chop, chop
Location: Chow Kit New Bazaar, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
About: He was FAST and FURIOUS! CHOP, CHOP, CHOP. One chicken in two minutes! That's a New World Record!

Title: The Slaughterhouse
Location: Sekinchan Fishing Village, Selangor, Malaysia
About: I called it 'My Pulitzer Moment'. It was the most surreal experience of my life, adrenaline pumping moments.

Title: My precious!
Location: Malacca Big Market, Malacca, Malaysia
About: Mr. Tan Kah Tho the chatty shopkeeper. I still remember everything just like it was yesterday. We talked, talked and talked. He was kind enough to share with me his Malacca specialties including authentic asam paste with no added preservative, expensive salted fish and many more. Happy go lucky guy.

Title: Awww
Location: Aboriginal Resettlement Village, Cameron Highlands, Malaysia
About: I still remember him...chubby and shy. He speaks aboriginal language. I replied with my silly sign language :) The kids were AMAZING! Friendly, chatty and happy go lucky bunch.

Title: Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa [Translation: International Nasi Lemak]
Location: Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
About: Did you see that? The cashier was staring at me! LOL! I think she was trying to tell me “Get back, you darn paparazzi! Get out of here!”

There's something else I want to share with you. Street photography according to Bruce Gilden. My Facebook buddies and I LIKE it so much! Check this YouTube video. Definitely a MUST-SEE!

  6. Nice photo. Keep on your effort. Thanks for showing us the beautiful of the people.

For the 3rd photo which taken in HaadYai, ขอบคุณ is enough to say thank you, to be more polite, we can use use 'ka' and 'khrab' for female and the latter for male .คุณ is mean 'you', คุณขอบคุณ become 'you thank you' already.

  8. Great street photography. Excellent portraits you did on the street. Interesting video. Ha! but I don't think I would feel comfortable the way Bruce shots on the streets.. It feels lik- "Smile! You are on candid camera!"

Hey Awang, thanks for dropping by! I missed the WWD event :(

    lechua, CK Khoo & eunice

    Thanks for your kind words!

    Micki,

    Thanks!

Bruce is my idol :) He is a bit ultra but I LOVE his photography works. After all street photography is all about getting up close and personal. It takes a lot of guts to emulate him. I think Asians are not ready for this kind of candid approach.

    fufu,

Fufu and his camera :) Good luck with your upcoming new camera!

    Thanks all!
