Title: TORCH GINGER BUD/BUNGA KANTAN
Location: Pasar Borong KL, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Date: 24 April 2009, 10:28am
Camera: Nikon D60 with Aperture: f/3.5, ISO Equiv.: 200
Torch ginger bud, a pretty pink flower, which has a delicate aroma, is the bud/flower of a tall and aromatic ginger native to Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, where it is called kecombrong, it is cooked with fish to reduce the smell or sliced as part of a vegetables salad. In Thailand the flowers are served raw with nam prik. The bud is quite fibrous, however, and is often either used whole and bruised or finely sliced.

Location: Pasar Borong KL, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Date: 24 April 2009, 10:15am
Camera: Nikon D60 with Aperture: f/8.0, ISO Equiv.: 100
The pandan leaves are used fresh or wilted. They have a nutty, botanical fragrance which enhances the flavor of foods, especially desserts and cakes.
On Friday, I decided to explore Pasar Borong Kuala Lumpur (KL Wholesale Market). This is the second biggest market in Klang Valley. The building itself look like a military bunker. As usual, I can see lots of foreign workers or helpers in the market.
50% Bangladeshis
20% Indonesians
20% Malaysians (Chinese, Malays and Indians)
10% Others
The wet market is divided into three big sections selling fruits, veggies and meat. I captured lots of photos in the market. The Bangladeshi workers even invited me to take their portrait photos. I don't really like to take portrait photo unless I'm being allowed to do so. Normally, Malaysians are a bunch of shy people - they either curse you or hide their faces. So, the moment they asked me to snap them in action, I was more than happy to do so.
As usual, street photography is not an easy task. I was asked the following questions: "What is the purpose of your photography?" "Are you going to publish these photos in the papers?" I replied "I'm taking photos on Malaysian fruits, veggies and meat" No more questions after that :)
Overall, Pasar Borong KL is a great place for street photography. If you wanna have a pleasant experience, remember to be humble, understanding and friendly. Avoid being snobbish. Casual conversation and chats will be rewarding as traders will be more open to you and you'll get special coverage.
Remember to follow Part 2 for more photos.

Cute looking choy sum. A wonderful meal if cooked with oyster sauce :)
It's been two weeks since I started my new job. I am not really sure if this is what I want for the next few years. Pay is good, a systematic company.....but...sigh....I am sick and tired with my 'robotic life'. Love it for a day or two and then feeling L.O.S.T for the next few days. Strange feelings.
Nah, I'm not going to think too much about that. I have to agree with the Aussie gal in my company - "Work to Live, Not Live to Work". I want to explore places, discover culture and meet people!!!
Good news!!! I'll be traveling again this coming Chinese New Year. Gonna visit Ipoh, Perak.

Chilies Galore
It's been awhile since I last updated my photo blog. I just started my new job recently and also spent some time giving tuition. A real tiring week for me :( This morning I opened up my bulky Klang Valley map and searched for Pasar Borong Selayang or Selayang Wholesale Market.
I stayed in Kepong Baru and I LOVE the wet market there - lots of varieties including mouth watering food, fresh veggies, fruits and clothes. I always wanted to capture some nice pictures of the market. Sadly, I do not have the courage and guts to carry my NIKON D60 DSLR camera to the market. I have this stupid feeling trying to tell me that these Chinese traders and food sellers are going to be a bunch of unreasonable idiots when I try to snap them in action. I had a bad experience late last year at Petaling Street or Kuala Lumpur Chinatown. Those traders in Chinatown are a bunch of parochial pricks - a forgettable trip.
I drove my car to Pasar Borong Kuala Selayang via Jalan Ipoh. There were lots of lorries and forklift trucks in the vicinity. Some of them were transporting boxes of Mandarin oranges to the market.

Pasar Borong Selayang is actually a wholesale market under one roof. The market is a bit dark and it was quite tough to get decent photos. I moved from one stall to another to capture pictures of veggies and fruits. Most of the traders comprised of Myanmans, Bangladeshis and a small number of Chinese and Malays. During the trip, I was surrounded with at least 3 to 4 curious traders trying to see my the pictures on my LCD panel. Well, I showed them those photos and some of them even arrange the veggies nicely for me to capture them.
Overall, it was a short and simple trip. The market is smaller than expected. The traders are friendly and approachable. One of them is Mr. Soto from Indonesia. He was the first trader that approached me and asked about my camera. Later, he invited me to his stall to show me his collection of photos - including some really neat shots taken during Siti Nurhaliza's wedding! I even let him snap a picture with my camera - a nice fella, felt good talking to him :) I learnt one important thing about street photography - you need to interact with the locals to better understand the daily routines and getting special coverage as well. It's not an easy thing to do because normally I don't really talk a lot - especially to strangers. But then again, I love to listen to their stories and share mine as well.
