Everyone can own a camera but not everyone can take that PERFECT street shot. The burning question..."What makes a great street photo?" Expensive camera gears? Luck? or just Candid Snaps?
Here's what I think – A great street photograph must elicit more than a quick glance and moment of recognition from the viewer. A sense of mystery and intrigue should remain. Give me a REASON to remember your photograph. As the great French street photographer Robert Doisneau (April 14, 1912 – April 1, 1994) commented: ‘If I knew how to take a good photograph, I’d do it every time.’
Nowadays, there are many street photogs out there. I have seen several thousands street shots, but for me, only one photographer stands out above the crowd. Meet Bruce Gilden, a noted street photographer, known for his uncompromising, in-your-face approach to street photography. A member of Magnum Photos since 1998, he shot images of Japan's Yakuza mobsters, the homeless, prostitutes, and members of bike gangs.
Bruce is an exceptionally talented photographer with an eye for fascinating moments and idiosyncratic details. And, I can tell you that he certainly is an inspiration! In a short documentary titled "Bruce Gilden - WNYC Street Photography Project.", he shares his successes, trials and tribulations in the photography industry. A highly recommended docu-film! My reply "I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your mother-in-law, it's always a hard thing to go through. I wish you strength in dealing with this.
I know it is hard, but believe me, there is always hope. As much as possible, look into the bright side of everything. Send him my very best regards and wishing him a speedy recovery".

My reply "Unfortunately, the bad will often stick with us longer than the good. Kuala Lumpur? She's a city filled with inconsiderate drivers, constant traffic jams, materialistic peeps and boorish city slickers. The mounting pressure of modern living has taken its toll on many people's lives.
On the bright side, Kuala Lumpur is a city that never sleeps, so full of life every minute of the day. Thanks for sharing, AK. You picture depicts the her true character - busy, busy, busy".

I was fortunate to have grown up surrounded by a variety of animals - dogs, birds, reptiles, and creepy crawlies. I used to have several pet dogs, my dad owned some award-winning singing birds and my siblings had a trove of reptiles. It seems that everybody loves animals, ...well almost. My mom despised them to the core! The debate about keeping animals, "hygiene" issues and blah, blah, blah...it was a constant arguments . I would rather not to bore you with the details.
Recently I've stumbled upon Dr Rayya, a self-confessed animal lover and a dedicated vet based in Australia. I must say that I have become fascinated and in awe, not only by her charm and lovely nature, but also her passion for showering love and affection on the animals under her care. Time flies fast, indeed. We are now approaching Weekly Photo Assignment: Theme 5. So without further adieu, I'd like to announce the TOP 9 WINNERS for Theme 4: "Animal Planet". First of all I would like to apologise for the delay in releasing the winners list. I've been quite busy with a few things lately, and to make matters worse, my ISP has been giving me @&^%$* bandwidth. Here's the good news: I'm writing again! It's Saturday night, it's raining and I'm typing away. WOOHOO!
Black and white photography has always been my very favorite. Its classic and elegant photographic look is TIMELESS! It can have a powerful effect but too much of it is never a good thing. Being able to recognize stunning subject matter, perfect lighting and distinctive textures will help create a once in a lifetime black and white shot.
One of my favourite all time B&W photographer is Vivian Maier, a nanny cum street photog. Her black and white photographs, many taken in the 1950s and 60s, captured the energy and feeling of the world as she viewed it. Simplicity and talent matters! My other favourite is Ying Tang, a renowned street photog from Cologne, Germany. These ladies have been a huge inspiration to me. Check out the YouTube video below for more information.

Huff (took a long deep breath and blow heavily). Where should I start? I almost gave up on the Weekly Photo Assignment. I mean, it's kind of so frustrating to see the progress of Theme 2: Fruit and/or Veg. People were not responding. I've posted numerous posters and reminders on my Facebook wall, and the waits seem forever. Where are the pictures? Is Theme 2 too difficult? Is the title a lil bit confusing? What went...WRONG???!
With these questions lingering on my mind, I've decided to look on the bright side. There's no use in pouting and complaining. My momma always said, "Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get" ｡◕ ‿ ◕｡
Luckily the momentum started to pick up after some Facebook friends did a bit of 'pushing'. It was fantastic and there's hope after all! The Weekly Photo Assignment is not a 'hangat-hangat tahi ayam' project aka "for as long as the chicken shit is hot". I've received some YUMMYLICIOUS and COLORFUL entries - durians, red melons, purse-like strawberry, tutti-frutti and funky veggie.
Today, I've decided to add my personal comments and critiques on these pictures. I am neither pro photog nor Simon Cowell wannabe, but I do have keen eyes for great pictures. Ooh, one more thing, Theme 3: Black and White ROCKS! It has been receiving overwhelming response from fans worldwide. I WANT MORE! Keep your B&W pictures coming! GO! GO! GO! 加油！
What Alex Loke says "The sound or the smell of durian will turn off a group of people, but Asians LOVE IT! OOH LA LA! This picture speaks volume - the soft yellowish flesh is so enticing, I can almost touch it! Every time I look at this picture I can only think of three words - creamy, buttery and sweet!"
What Alex Loke says "This picture shows artistic quality and creative interpretation of Theme 2: Fruit and/or Veg. The five colors caught my attention - red melon, green apple, orange, white saucer and dark background. On a side note, I would LOVE to see a bit more of the orange juicy look :)

What Alex Loke says "My eyes were fixated on the giant berry: a purse - like strawberry! It's a cutie and definitely an attention-grabber. Having said that, I've noticed a distracting element on the picture - the black tube. I usually try to move it away from the main focus - push it to the back and hide it.
What Alex Loke says "A visually appetizing photo, with a riot of colors, shapes and sizes. It was the specificity in the randomness that caught my attention - tomatoes on top, capsicum on the middle and chilies on lower right."
What Alex Loke says "This picture fits the theme very well! I can see fruits (carved melons, starfruit) and veggie (potatoes and cucumbers). Interesting color effect. I would definitely like to see this picture in its original colors.
What Alex Loke says "I can almost smell and taste it! Fresh fruity aroma. Papayas, apples, mangoes, oranges, plum and more. This picture will look better if taken from another angle, zoom out a bit for more coverage".

It's 2:30 a.m., Saturday morning and I'm pretty much awake. My mind won't shut off, I keep thinking of things I should do, write and say about my Facebook Weekly Photo Assignment. I guess I'm a little bit too excited. OK...here we go...
As you probably know by now, I'm the sole admin of A Malaysian Photo and Travel Blog (MPTB) Facebook page. MPTB had a humble beginning. It started out as an ordinary Facebook page - with the intention of sharing my blog posts via Facebook. As time progressed I have improved the design to suit a wide range of audience. I've learnt FBML (Facebook Markup Language), CSS, jQuery and JavaScript. A lot of effort has been put into making MPTB as interactive as possible.
Today, MPTB has a total of 5 interactive iFrame tabs and 2 canvas applications. ✓ Weekly Theme is my latest pet project. It's a Weekly Photo Assignment - fans were encouraged to post photo that best represent the ✓ Weekly Theme. It started off slow, but gradually picked up. I'm thankful to my Facebook friends and fans for participating in the Weekly Photo Assignment.
I was expecting 50 entries, but it didn't materialize. Darn! But on the positive side of things, I've received a sizable number of good entries. Looking through the pictures just makes my heart melt - a mixture of emotions (happiness, sadness, burdened, loneliness, confusion and excitement). I love the uniqueness, style and approach. Great job fans, and thanks a ton for making this happen!
