October 2008 (Venturing into the world of birds at Kuala Lumpur Bird Park)
I boarded a public bus to Kota Raya, Kuala Lumpur. After that, I flagged down a taxi to continue my journey to Kuala Lumpur Bird Park. The Malay taxi driver said "Apa? KL Burung Park? Ada ke? Mana dia? (translation "What? KL Bird Park? Is there such a place? Show me the way!) One word to describe the moment...FLABBERGASTED!
I decided to flag down another taxi. This time...the Indian driver said "What? Are you joking! The park is just around the corner...within walking distance. I told him I am not familiar with the place. Finally, he agreed to drive the taxi to KL Bird Park for a RM5 flat rate. During the entire journey, he was berating me nonstop about my shallow knowledge on KL. I just nodded my head and say yeah...yes...right! You are THE MAN!!!
The entrance fee to the park is RM15 for Malaysian and RM39 for those without MyKad. Visitors are given a piece of map to walk around the park (a lousy map). The park is divided into four zones. I decided to move from Zone 1 to Zone 4. There are lots of birds in the park...peacocks, peahens, macaws, lovebirds, milky stork, eagles, owl, horn bills, flamingos, emu, cassowaries and more.
There is also an amphitheatre in Zone 4. I managed to watch the daily bird show. It was a mediocre performance. Nothing new...same old performance...and the worst part is the usage of Kitaro's decade old song during the show. I am very disappointed with these animals show in Malaysia...lack of new ideas, boring stuff and not attractive enough.
I spent nearly four hours in the park. I am not overly impress with the park. The management can do a better job by making the park more interesting. For instance, the egg incubation room and nursery section should me more interactive. Only a few chicks...I think less than 10 chicks on display. Other than that, visitors are not allowed to touch the incubator machine on display...it defeat the purpose of the education effort.
Overall, it was still a pleasant experience. Being in the park with birds like peacocks, swans, flamingos, hornbills and pelicans roaming freely was AWESOME! I definitely enjoyed the open air aviaries. A fantastic up, close and personal experience.

Picture 2 - A vicious looking macaw...come closer and I'll bite off you finger! HA! HA! HA! 
Picture 3 - Signboard showing different types of freshwater birds...very informative.
Picture 4 - A pair of milky stork crossing the road..there are lots of storks in the bird park!
Picture 5 - A slice of papaya. Look at the flesh...traces of multiple pecks wound from the birds.
Picture 6 - Not very sure with this bird...look like a peacock. It has a very long feathery tail (about 1.5 m long). Check out Picture 7 for the tail.
Picture 7 - The tail! I managed to touch the hind tail and I was shocked! It feels like a piece of silky cloth!
Picture 8 - CHOW TIME! Sweet papayas! BURP! I am full...you wanna try these papayas?
Picture 9 - Let me out! I miss my momma...
Picture 10 - Look at the BEAK! This young ostrich was hanging on the fence for such a long time...waiting for someone?
Picture 11 - My comrades...get ready for the ZIGZAG honour to our beloved visitor. I said bend your body 45 degrees!
Picture 12 - FEEDING TIME! It was a feeding frenzy. The lovebirds were virtually fighting to get a sip of the drink.
Picture 13 - Look like a plush toy. "SQUEEZE ME"

Picture 16 - Try to guess the number of love birds. I think around 10 - 12 birds. These birds were crazy! Flying haphazardly...one of them even landed on my head. Fortunately, no messy bird poos.
