The preservation was perfected! These are dried and salted fishes. The meat is quite tough! A bit crunchy after deep fried. The presence of salt and also absence of water ensure these fishes good for consumption even after 5 years!

Mr. Tan is holding pieces of dried and salted fishes. He took these fishes directly out from his freezer just to show me his huge collection of dried fishes. A very nice gesture from him!

Love the simple packaging of these tamarind paste. These are 100% authentic paste without any preservative. It has a mixture of mild sweetness and extreme sour. An important ingredient for Baba and Nyonya food.

My mom love to add pieces of these brownish dried octopus into her soup for strong flavour and aroma. It taste really GOOD!

Mr. Tan informed me that these tiny little bony fishes are normally added in Baba and Nyonya's soup to create natural added flavour and also to increase the aroma.

My initial plan is to spend maximum one hour discovering Pasar Besar Melaka. Halfway through my journey, the sky turn cloudy and it started to rain heavily. So, I decided to spent more time exploring the big market. I truly enjoyed browsing those fruits and veggie stall. Later, I proceeded to the dried product section of the market.
I was attracted to one particular shop selling dried and salted fishes. I can see lots of varieties there! You can buy small anchovies and also medium to large sized preserved fish. I took my NIKON D60 camera and took some photos there.
I had a VERY LONG chat with Mr. Tan (owner of the shop). This guy is the man! He is an amazing guy! I learnt so many things about those dried products in his shop. He asked me to taste some of his products including the authentic gula Malacca and spices. It was a great 30 minutes moment talking with him because he was such a sporting, helpful and courteous trader! He even showed me his treasured products kept in his mini freezer - EXTRA LARGE salted fish!
I have to say this mini shop is a HIDDEN GEM in Pasar Besar Malacca. You can get so many stuff over here including traditional handmade tamarind paste, HUGE collection of salted fish, herbs and spices. So, if you are somewhere around Malacca, remember to pay a visit to this wonderful shop AT Level 1 (Tan Kah Tho - Shop Number R25).
Overall, Pasar Besar Melaka is a wholesome market with everything under one roof. I'm glad that I've made a detour to this market on my way to Malacca Zoo. Spending some time chatting with these Malaccans was really a great moment in my life. Street photography is not an easy task because Malaysians are generally camera shy. Nonetheless, once you strike a friendly chat with these people, you'll get extensive coverage for your photos collection.

The following photos were taken in Pasar Besar Melaka (Malacca Big Market) in the Historical City of Malacca. This is the BEST wet and dry market by far! I've been to Pasar Borong Selayang, Bazaar Baru Chow Kit, Kepong Baru Wet Market and a few other markets - but this decent market in Malacca is simply WHOLESOME and FANTASTIC!!
You can get virtually anything under one roof in Pasar Besar Malacca. The two level market is divided into few sections: fruit and veggies, meat products, fresh and preserved seafood , specialised Malacca spice and herb, daily products and more! The list is endless.........
The fruit and veggies section is a not to be missed place to visit. The fruits are FRESH, COLOURFUL and it look so INVITING! The local fruits include golden yellow bananas, sweet and sour pineapples, fleshy papayas and more. Other than that, there are large globe sized grapes, delicious tangy oranges, lip red and light yellow peaches and crunchy apples.
These fruits were mostly brought from large wholesaler from China, Australia, US and Malaysia. I truly enjoyed browsing these fruit and veggie stall because the products are nicely packed, creatively display and super fresh - you'll be spoilt for choice! The traders (especially aunties and uncles) are a bunch of cheerful and friendly people with lively character. I strike a long conversation with these chatty friends. Talking with these people really make my photo trip in Malacca precious, meaningful and unforgettable. I get to know more about their daily routines, their business and of course given special photo coverage!!!
Pasar Besar Melaka or in English translation Malacca Big Market is full of surprises! So many things to explore and so many products there! Unfortunately, the market which is located opposite Melaka Sentral (the main bus station) is lacking of customer. The traders were lamenting about poor customer turnout in the market. I decided to promote their market in my photo blog and travelogue. I'm glad that I'm doing it now, with over three posts about the big market. I have to say the market is a HIDDEN GEM in the city of Malacca! For those visiting Malacca YOU MUST visit this market and pack some authentic Malacca harvest and product! You'll not regret visiting this wonderful market - TRUST ME!
